Floyd Sonny Tillman and his wife Lucille founded Sonny’s Real Pit-Bar-B-Q on April 17, 1968. The barbeque restaurant was located in Waldo Road in Gainesville, Florida. They were popular cooking in a time-taking traditional way. They smoked over the oak and served big portions that were more homely and local.
After almost a decade in 1977, they decided to start franchising. At that time their menu included a variety of meat like pork, beef, ribs, and chicken. They had some sides like beans and more. Now they have added more menu items like buffalo wings, t. Louis style ribs, and beef brisket, burgers, and more options in appetizers.
In 1988, the company expanded more. By then they had 77 restaurants. It didn’t stop there. During the 2000s, they became one of the largest chains of BBQ restaurants in the United States. They were in a total of 150 locations. Currently, there are 113 Sonny’s BBQ restaurants in southeastern states.
